Ministry Clarifies Confusion as WAEC Registration Continues

Abuja, [Date] – In a major policy clarification, the Federal Ministry of Education has today moved to end widespread confusion over subject selection under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum, assuring students and parents that there are no restrictions on what subjects learners can choose.

The announcement, jointly made by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa FAMedS, CON, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sa'id Suwaiba Ahmad, comes amid growing public concern and misinterpretation circulating online and in schools nationwide.

"No Barriers Between Arts and Science"

In a decisive statement, the Ministers emphasized that all subjects remain fully open for student selection, provided choices are made with proper guidance from school authorities, parents, or certified counsellors.

"The curriculum is designed to be flexible, student-centred, and supportive of diverse academic interests and career pathways," they stated.

Crucially, they confirmed that:

  • Science students may choose subjects classified under Social Sciences or Arts.

  • Arts and Social Science students may also select subjects traditionally grouped under Sciences.

Digital Technology = ICT

The Ministry also clarified the renaming of a key subject, confirming that "Information and Communication Technology (ICT)" is now "Digital Technology" – a change in name only, with no alteration to curriculum content.

"Students who previously offered ICT are fully eligible to sit for Digital Technology in examinations," the statement read.

Trade Subjects Optional

On Trade Subjects, the Ministry explained that while six trade subjects are approved under the curriculum, no student is obliged to register for any trade subject if their school does not offer it or if they have not been taught it.

Call for Calm and Correct Guidance

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to a smooth, inclusive, and well-guided implementation of the revised curriculum nationwide.

Parents, school proprietors, counsellors, and examination bodies are urged to rely only on verified information and provide appropriate guidance to students as WAEC registration continues.

"The Ministry will continue to champion seamless, accurate, and well-coordinated registration processes across the country," the statement concluded.

FG CLARIFIES SUBJECT SELECTION UNDER THE SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM AS WAEC REGISTRATION CONTINUES

The Federal Ministry Of Education has issued comprehensive guidance to address widespread enquiries from students, parents, school proprietors and administrators regarding subject selection under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum. The clarification follows numerous calls, letters and public concerns arising from misinterpretations circulating across various platforms.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa FAMedS, CON, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sa'id Suwaiba Ahmad, explained that there is no restriction or exclusion attached to the selection Of any approved subject within the Senior Secondary School Curriculum. They emphasized that all subjects remain fully open for students to choose from, provided such choices are properly guided by the school authority, parents or a certified school counsellor.

They further noted that a science student may select subjects classified under the social sciences or arts, while students in the arts and social sciences may also choose subjects traditionally grouped under the sciences. According to them, the curriculum is designed to be flexible, student centred and supportive of diverse academic interests and career pathways.

The Ministers also clarified issues relating to the subject formerly known as Information and Communication Technology. They stated that the subject has now been renamed Digital Technology, stressing that the change is purely in nomenclature and does not alter the curriculum content. Students who previously offered Information and Communication Technology are therefore fully eligible to sit for Digital Technology during registration and examinations.

On the matter of Trade Subjects, the Ministry explained that six trade subjects have been identified and approved under the curriculum. A student may register for any of these subjects if the school offers them and the student has been taught the subject. However, where a student has not been exposed to or offered any Of the six trade subjects, there is no obligation for such a student to register for any trade subject as a third subject.
