WAEC DISPELS RUMOURS OF SUBJECT RESTRICTION FOR 2026 WASSCE
Council Clarifies Role in Curriculum Implementation
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has debunked reports circulating in the media alleging that it issued directives restricting Senior Secondary School students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement issued by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina (anipr), the Council described the claims as “unfounded and misleading”, stressing that WAEC did not issue any directive limiting subject choices for candidates.

According to the statement, “WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption. The Council did not issue any such directive nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject(s) for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged.”
The Council further clarified that the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria are the responsibilities of the Federal Government, not WAEC. “As an examination body, WAEC only implements government-approved policies through its assessment processes,” the statement read.

WAEC emphasized that it operates strictly within the legal and operational frameworks of its host country and that any introduction or modification of curricula follows due process as mandated by the Federal Government.
The Council therefore urged schools, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from WAEC for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for the 2026 WASSCE.
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, fairness, and excellence in assessing candidates, assuring that every student sitting for the 2026 examination will be given an equal opportunity without any form of disenfranchisement.
