Stop Sharing BVN, NIN for Promo; EFCC Warns Nigerians
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, views with great concern a rising fraudulent scheme newly perfected by fraudsters to defraud Nigerians of their hard-earned money and considers it imperative to alert Nigerians to be wary of ubiquitous foreign airlines’ ticketing discount promos.
The scheme involves the use of malware to gain unauthorized access to the account information of unsuspecting victims. Teasers like “ Promo”, “ Investment Windows” and other baits are usually employed to make their victims volunteer their account information through which fraudsters execute transactions on their behalf by sending their funds to accounts mainly in Fintech Institutions. Through this access, fraudsters then control and launder the funds through purchase of crypto currencies.
A case in point was a “Promo” offering the public 50% discount of ticket purchase in a leading foreign airline. Victims are led to pay a token of N500 into the account of the airline. The N500 payment which is now dressed as Charity payment is the leeway through which the fraudsters gain access to their victim’s personal information.
The victims were deceived into downloading the App of the airline to be eligible for the discount. However, after downloading the App and gaining unauthorized access to their personal details, funds were moved from the victim’s bank account into an account in a Microfinance Bank.
It is important to disclose that this fraud scheme is largely driven by an army of young Nigerians offering a paltry payment of between N1500 and N2000 to their victims to make them surrender a copy of their personal information details to them and sell the same information to some Fintech Institutions for about N5000.
These canvassers called themselves “Account Suppliers” or “KYC Group”. Information available to the Commission revealed that the actors are up to 12000 all over the country seeking account donors that will surrender their NIN registration slip, BVN, passport photograph and other means of identification for a little fee.
These information are then used to open accounts with Fintech companies for investment scam and sundry fraudulent schemes.
The Commission has made some arrests in this regard and recoveries of money lost to fraudulent Promo actors and Account Suppliers are ongoing. Members of the public are enjoined to be wary of these actors and on no account should any Nigerian agree to be an Account Donor for any purpose as this is a threat to national security.
The EFCC is committed to safeguarding the financial space of the nation in the overall interests of all Nigerians.

BREAKING: 2025 WASSCE Results Ready By August 4; Says WAEC
All is set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release the results of its 2025 May\ June secondary school certificate examination (WASSCE) on or before Thursday, August 4.

The Head of National Office of WAEC Nigeria, Dr Amos Dangut, made this known on Sunday in a statement issued and made available to newsmen in Lagos by the head of Public Affairs Unit of the organisation, Mrs Moyosola Adesina.

The organisation described the media report as fake news, noting that it did not know the purported press statement or any other information claimed to be in it.
“The WAEC management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council. The said examination has not been cancelled.

FG Sets New Minimum Age Requirement for Enrollment Into Nursery, Primary and JS1
FG sets 12-year new minimum age for JSS1 admission
A new policy document on Non-State Schools launched by the Federal Ministry of Education last week has pegged the entry age for pupils seeking admission into Junior Secondary Schools after completing six years of primary education at 12.
Non-State Schools, also referred to as independent or private schools or non-government schools, are educational institutions not managed by the government.
They are typically financed by tuition payments as well as donations from individuals, businesses, communities, faith-based organisations and foundations.
According to the policy document, non-state schools are increasingly playing a major role in education provision in the country, despite variations in the quality of education being offered across the categories of schools.
Speaking on the age of enrolment, the Federal Ministry of Education said, “Nursery education shall be of three years’ duration.
“Children shall be admitted into Nursery One when they attain the age of three years, Nursery Two on attaining the age of four, and one year of compulsory pre-primary education (Kindergarten) on attaining the age of five years, in accordance with the specification of Section 2(17) of the NPE, 2013 Edition.”
On the age of enrolment for junior secondary schools, the policy clearly stated that, “Basic education shall be of nine years’ duration. There shall be a six-year primary and a three-year Junior Secondary School (JSS). Children shall be admitted into Primary One when they attain the age of six years.
“Every child must complete six years of primary education. They shall be admitted into Junior Secondary School (JSS1) when they have completed six (6) years of primary education, at around the age of twelve (12) years.”
If this new policy is followed to the letter, it implies that Nigerian learners would attain the rightful age of 18 before being qualified for entrance into higher institutions.
Recently, there have been controversies over the mandatory age of entry into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The former Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, announced 18 years as the minimum entry requirement, before the new minister, Dr Tunji Alausa, reverted the policy to 16 years for entry into university.
The Nigeria Education Digest 2022, published by the ministry, indicated that “Non-state schools outnumber state schools in at least 26 states of the federation at the Junior Secondary level, whereas at the primary level, state schools outnumber non-state schools in 19 states of the federation.
“The growth in the number of non-state schools between 2017 and 2022 (the last five years reported) has been faster than that of state schools.
“Non-state primary schools grew in number by 31.56 per cent between 2017 and 2022, while state schools grew in number by 3.3 per cent within the same period.
“At the Junior Secondary level, non-state schools grew in number by 35.06 per cent between 2017 and 2022, while state schools grew in number by 6.8 per cent only within the same period.”
