Abuja, Nigeria — In a decisive move to streamline the transition from secondary to tertiary education, the Federal Government has announced a major harmonization of the 2027 external examination timetable. The initiative aims to ensure that all results are released by August 2027, allowing candidates to seamlessly begin tertiary admission processes by September.
The announcement was detailed in a press release issued on October 14, 2026, by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.
A Coordinated Approach to Examinations
The effort to synchronize the national examination calendar is part of the broader education reform agenda championed by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa. The reforms fall under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which prioritizes efficiency, coordination, and improved educational outcomes.
To drive this objective forward, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, convened a high-level meeting with heads and representatives of major examination bodies at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The meeting focused on aligning schedules, minimizing timetable clashes, and ensuring the timely processing of results.
The Proposed 2027 Timetable
Under the newly harmonized schedule, key examinations will be staggered to prevent overlaps, with results processing accelerated. The proposed timeline is as follows:
JAMB-UTME: Scheduled for March 15 – 25, 2027, with results expected within the same month.
NECO-SSCE: Scheduled for April 1 – May 14, 2027, with results expected in August.
WAEC-WASSCE: Scheduled for May 11 – June 18, 2027, with results expected in August.
NABTEB: Scheduled for June 1 – July 5, 2027, with results expected in August.
NBAIS: Scheduled for June 10 – July 9, 2027, with results expected in August.
Commitment to Accountability
The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, reiterated its commitment to removing bottlenecks in the education sector.
“The Ministry will sustain its engagement with examination bodies to ensure adherence to the agreed timelines, strengthen accountability, and align examination schedules and results releases with tertiary admissions,” the statement read.
By ensuring results are available by August, the government aims to eliminate the traditional delays that often leave prospective undergraduates waiting months after the school year has begun.
